Troop 289Leadership (Youth)  Positions

Boys in troop leadership positions should always set a good example, wear their uniforms correctly, and live by the Scout Oath and the Scout Law. Leadership positions (Senior Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leaders, and Assistant Patrol Leaders) are held for six months, and generally only Scouts who have achieved the rank of First Class may hold leadership positions. Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) - Elected
Responsible to : Scoutmaster (SM)



    Specific Duties:

bullet Preside at all troop meetings, events, activities, and annual program planning conference.
bullet Chair the patrol leaders' council (PLC).
bullet Name appointed boy leaders with the advice and consent of the Scoutmaster.
bullet Assign duties and responsibilities to other leaders.
bullet Work with Scoutmaster in training junior leaders.
bullet Senior Patrol Leader should have completed JLTC (Junior Leadership Training Conference) prior to assuming this position if it has been offered in our area.
bullet Sets the example, wears the uniform correctly, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, and shows Scout spirit.

 

Assistant Senior Patrol Leader (ASPL) - Selected
Responsible to: SPL



    Specific Duties:

bullet Be responsible for training and giving direct leadership to the following appointed junior leaders: scribe, librarian, troop historian, instructor, quartermaster, webmaster, leave no trace trainer and chaplains aide.
bullet Help with leading meetings and activities as called upon by the senior patrol leader.
bullet Take over troop leadership in the absence of the senior patrol leader.
bullet Perform tasks assigned by the senior patrol leader. Function as a member of the patrol leaders' council (PLC).
bullet Sets the example, wears the uniform correctly, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, and shows Scout spirit.

 

Patrol Leader (PL) - Elected Position
Responsible to: SPL



    Specific Duties:

bullet Plan and lead patrol meetings and activities.
bullet Keep patrol members informed.
bullet Assign each patrol member a job and help them succeed. Know what the patrol members and other leaders can do.
bullet Represent the patrol at all patrol leaders' council (PLC)meetings and at the annual program planning a conference.
bullet Prepare the patrol to take part in all troop activities.
bullet Develop patrol spirit.
bullet Work with other troop leaders to make the troop run well.
bullet Sets the example, wears the uniform correctly, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, and shows Scout spirit.

 

Patrol Leader - New Scout Patrol - Appointed
Responsible to: SPL and troop guide



    Specific Duties:

bullet With the assistance of the troop guide: Plan and lead patrol meetings and activities Prepare your patrol to take part in all troop activities.
bullet Develop patrol spirit.
bullet Keep patrol members informed.
bullet Assign each patrol member a job; know what patrol members and other leaders can do.
bullet Represent the patrol at all patrol leaders' council (PLC) meetings during your term of office.
bullet Sets the example, wears the uniform correctly, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, and shows Scout spirit.

 

Assistant Patrol Leader (APL) - Appointed
Responsible to: PL
Specific Duties:

bullet Assist the patrol leader in planning and leading patrol meetings and activities.
bullet Keeping patrol member informed.
bullet Preparing their patrol to take part in all troop activities.
bullet Take charge of the patrol in the absence of the patrol leader.
bullet Represent the patrol at all patrol leaders council (PLC) meetings in the absence of the patrol leader.
bullet Help develop patrol spirit.
bullet Work with other troop leaders to make the troop run well.
bullet Sets the example, wears the uniform correctly, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, and shows Scout spirit.

Troop Quartermaster (QM) - Appointed
Responsible to: ASPL & troop committee member responsible for equipment



Specific Duties:

bullet Attends monthly QM meetings.
bullet Keep records of patrol and troop equipment.
bullet Keep equipment in good repair
bullet Issue equipment and see that it is returned in good order.
bullet Suggest new or replacement items.
bullet Sets the example, wears the uniform correctly, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, and shows Scout spirit.

 

Troop Guide - Appointed
Responsible to: ASM – new Scout patrol



    Specific Duties:

bullet Help Scouts meet advancement requirements through First Class.
bullet Advise patrol leader on his duties and his responsibilities at patrol leaders' council meetings Attend patrol leaders' council meetings with the new Scout patrol leader.
bullet Prevent harassment of new Scouts by older Scouts.
bullet Help assistant Scoutmaster train new patrol leader when he is elected.
bullet Guide new Scout though early troop experiences to help them become comfortable in the troop and the outdoors.
bullet Sets the example, wears the uniform correctly, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, and shows Scout spirit.

Troop Scribe - Appointed
Responsible to: ASPL and works with the troop committee



    Specific Duties:

bullet Attend and keep a log of patrol leaders' council (PLC) meetings.
bullet Record attendance as required.
bullet Maintain troop correspondence (thank you notes, donation requests, etc.)
bullet Work with appropriate troop committee members responsible for finance, records and advancement as needed.
bullet Sets the example, wears the uniform correctly, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, and shows Scout spirit.

Troop Librarian - Appointed
Responsible to: ASPL



    Specific Duties:

bullet Establish and maintain a troop library.
bullet Keep records on literature owned by the troop.
bullet Add new or replacement item needed.
bullet Have literature available for borrowing at troop meetings.
bullet Keep system to check literature in and out.
bullet Follow up on late returns.
bullet Sets the example, wears the uniform correctly, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, and shows Scout spirit.

Troop Historian - Appointed
Responsible to: ASPL



    Specific Duties:

bullet Gather pictures and facts about past activities of the troop and keep them in scrapbooks, wall displays, or information files.
bullet Take care of troop trophies and keepsakes.
bullet Keep information about troop alumni.   
bullet Sets the example, wears the uniform correctly, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, and shows Scout spirit.

Chaplains Aide - Appointed
Responsible to: ASPL



    Specific Duties:

bullet

Assists the Troop chaplain with religious services at Troop activities.

bullet

Tells Scouts about the religious emblem program for their faith.

bullet

Makes sure religious holidays are considered during the Troop program planning process.

bullet

Helps plan for religious observance in Troop activities.

bullet

Sets a good example, enthusiastically and correctly wears the Scout uniform, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, and shows Scout spirit.

 

Den Chief - Appointed
Responsible to: ASPL



    Specific Duties:

bullet Knows the purposes of Cub Scouting.
bullet Helps Cub Scouts advance through Cub Scout ranks.
bullet Encourages Cub Scouts to join a Boy Scout Troop upon graduation.
bullet Assists with activities in the Den Meetings.
bullet Is a friend to the boys in the Den.
bullet Helps out at weekly Den Meetings and monthly Pack meetings.
bullet Meets with adult members of the Den, Pack, and Troop as necessary.
bullet Sets the example, wears the uniform correctly, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, and shows Scout spirit.

Order of the Arrow Representative - Appointed
Responsible to: ASPL



    Specific Duties:

bullet Encourage year round and resident camping in the Troop, older Scout participation in high adventure programs, and participation in community service projects.
bullet Assist with leadership skills training.
bullet Encourage Arrowmen to fill leadership positions in the Troop, and participate in OA activities.
bullet Sets the example, wears the uniform correctly, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, and shows Scout spirit.

Troop Webmaster - Appointed
Responsible to: ASPL



    Specific Duties:

bullet Work with various unit members on needed topics for Troop Web
bullet Ensure the Troop Web site is  youth-run as possible
bullet Help out with the Troop Web site
bullet Works with appropriate troop committee members responsible for Troop Web.
bullet Sets the example, wears the uniform correctly, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, and shows Scout spirit.

Troop Leave No Trace Trainer - Appointed
Responsible to: ASPL



    Specific Duties:

bullet Know and teach the seven principles of Leave No Trace to Troop members.
bullet Know and teach the Outdoor Code to Troop members.
bullet Attend a BSA certified Leave No Trace training program, when offered.
bullet Work with Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmasters and Troop Leaders to promote and train "Leave No Trace" at all campouts and events.
bullet Sets the example, wears the uniform correctly, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, and shows Scout spirit.

Troop Bugler - Appointed
Responsible to: ASPL



    Specific Duties:

bullet Makes appropriate bugle calls, as requested, at troop/team activities. 
bullet Sets the example, wears the uniform correctly, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, and shows Scout spirit.
